The Archivists' Guild

Guardians of the Kingdom's Memory

The Order

The Archivists' Guild is one of the oldest and most respected orders in the kingdom. Founded in the ashes of the Great Erasure, it gathers those who have devoted their lives to the preservation of knowledge. Neither soldiers nor merchants, the Archivists are the silent guardians of the world's memory - without them, each generation would have to relearn everything from scratch.

Their motto, carved above the main door of the Citadel of Knowledge, rings out like an oath: "Nothing is lost as long as an Archivist watches." Every member of the Guild speaks it on the day of their initiation, hand resting upon the Grand Codex, the oldest book preserved in the archives.

Guild Ranks

The Guild is organized into five ranks, each marking a milestone in the mastery of archiving arts. It all begins at the rank of Recruit - you have barely arrived at the Citadel, you cannot yet tell a sealed parchment from a tavern draft, and that is perfectly normal. The Master Archivist welcomes you, entrusts you with your first quill, and guides you through your first steps.

Next comes the rank of Apprentice, granted to those who have mastered the fundamentals: creating an archive, recording changes, navigating through history. The Companion is an accomplished Archivist, able to work with the branches of time and resolve conflicts between diverging chronicles. The Master Archivist teaches others and maintains the Guild's most complex systems. Finally, at the summit, the Master Versioner - a legendary title, reserved for those who have pierced the deepest mysteries of archiving and can weave time itself.

Ranks are not merely honorific. Each promotion unlocks access to new halls of the Citadel, more powerful tools, and greater responsibilities. A Companion, for example, receives the keys to the Distant Portals.

Traditions and Rules

The Guild lives by a strict but fair code of honor. First rule: every change must be documented. An Archivist who modifies a chronicle without leaving a trace commits the gravest offense there is - it is as if the past had never existed. Second rule: never work alone on an original. Archivists always create branches - working copies that they later merge into the main chronicle after verification.

Among the oldest traditions, the Ceremony of the First Scroll marks the official entry of a recruit into the order. The newcomer must create their first archive, record an entry, and seal it with their name. It is a simple yet solemn moment, for it symbolizes a lifelong commitment to the service of memory.

The Guild also has its own seal - a parchment scroll encircled by a ring of light, topped with a quill - that every Archivist wears embroidered on their cloak. This symbol is recognized and respected in every kingdom across the continent.

Relations with the Outside World

The Guild maintains relations with many other organizations throughout the kingdom and beyond. The Guild Protocol governs the exchange of chronicles between different sections - for the Archivists' Guild is not the only one: sister branches exist in other lands, each with its own archives and its own specialties.

Some Archivists choose to leave the Citadel for a time to serve as ambassadors or advisors to kings and lords. Others venture into remote territories to recover ancient writings threatened with disappearance. The Guild is everywhere that knowledge needs to be protected.
